Dog Raincoat FAQs

Water-resistant raincoats are made with woven material and non-waterproof stitching - items that are water-resistant will repel the effects of water to a point. The effects of heavy rain pressure and longer exposure to rain will allow some of the rain through. There are openings on rainwear to attach a leash to a dog harness underneath, which can allow for a small amount of water to pass through as well. For more heavy-duty rain protection, check out Canada Pooch waterproof styles to find the best waterproof coat for dog walking!

Not all pups require a raincoat to be safe and comfortable, but rainwear for dogs can be helpful to keep your pup happy and allow them to play outside for longer! Sometimes, a raincoat with some warmth can be helpful for transitional weather or wet climates. An added benefit of dog rain protection is less cleanup due to the mud and rain protection!

There are multiple types of rainwear for dog walking. The Slush Suit is water-resistant and will keep your pup dry in light rain! It is also a great dog rain outfit for protecting their coat from mud and slush and prevents snowballs from forming in the hair for easier clean-up. If you are experiencing heavier rain, Canada Pooch waterproof coats will provide more heavy-duty dog rain protection.

The best raincoats for your pup will depend on their needs, your preferences, and the environment you’re living in! Many pet parents need cold protection or something lightweight, or have a dog with a unique body shape. We are always happy to help find the best dog walking raincoat for you and your pup - get in touch with us here.

Measuring your dog is the most accurate way to ensure the right fit of any dog rain outfit! The measurements we use are the chest girth (around the widest part of the chest), back length (from the base of the neck to the base of the tail), and the neck circumference (around the neck). You can contact us to find more information about how to take these measurements!

In an ideal fit of any rainwear for dog walking, the coat ends at the base of the tail and is not gaping in the chest. Many times, there will be multiple sizes that can be functional for your pup, but we suggest prioritizing the fit in the chest to keep them warmer and avoid any accidents! It’s okay for the jacket to be a few inches short of the tail or have a little extra room in the chest as long as they’re comfortable and have a full range of motion. If you’re unsure of the fit, reach out to our Customer Experience team with a few photos of the coat on or next to your pup!

How to Choose the Right Raincoat for Your Dog

Comfort and Temperature Regulation in Wet Weather

Wet fur doesn't just feel unpleasant; it actually stops working as insulation. When dog coats get saturated, they lose the natural warmth their fur normally provides. A well-fitted raincoat creates a protective barrier that keeps their coat dry and maintains that insulating air layer against their skin.

This is especially important for breeds with shorter coats, like French Bulldogs or Boston Terriers, who don't have much natural protection to begin with. However, even thick-coated breeds can struggle with temperature regulation once their fur is soaked through.

You'll notice the difference immediately on walks. Dry dogs stay focused on sniffing, playing, and exploring. Wet dogs may shake more often, pull toward home, or even refuse to keep moving. Having a good raincoat means your pup can enjoy their full walk, and you both stay happier in the process.

Size and Fit Considerations for Different Breed Types

A poorly fitted raincoat is almost as bad as having no raincoat at all. Too tight and your dog can't move comfortably, too loose and water seeps in through the gaps. You'll need three measurements: chest girth (around the widest part), back length (from the neck base to the tail base), and neck circumference. These measurements help you find the right size from our 15 available options, as standard small/medium/large sizing simply doesn't account for the differences in how various breeds are built.

If you're between sizes or unsure about fit, we can help! You can contact us and send photos of your pup in the coat for personalized guidance.
